Frequently Asked Questions
Hopefully I can answer a few common questions here, but please get in touch, via the contact page, if you have any further questions.

Where will my lessons be based?

I give saxophone lessons in my home in Malvern, approx 1 1/2 miles east of the town centre and with easy access to Great Malvern train station and local bus routes. You will need to be able to come to my house for your lessons.

Can my child learn to play saxophone?

Yes all children can learn to play saxophone, however, it is a heavy and large instrument, and a very young child might struggle to hold the instrument or reach the keys. There is no absolute minimum age, but as a guide a child younger than 7 would probably struggle. You could bring your child along for a trial lesson to see whether they are tall / strong enough.

How much do you charge?

I charge £13 for a 30 minute lesson. For younger children who will struggle with a 30 minute lesson I can offer slightly shorter lessons of 20 minutes at a rate of £9

When can I have lessons?

I can offer you lessons during the day or during the evenings, Mondays to Thursdays, whenever I have availability

Will I need my own saxophone?

Yes. I have an alto sax that is available for one trial lesson, but you will need to hire or purchase your own saxophone. You can decide which size of saxophone you would prefer to play - soprano, alto, tenor or baritone. I am happy to offer advice on where to buy or hire, makes, models and prices etc.

Do I need to be able to read music?

No, not at all. As you start to learn to play the saxophone, then you will also start to learn to read music - what those little black dots mean, how they relate to where your fingers need to be. It is all part of the learning experience.

How much practice will I need?

Everybody is different, but as a guide in the early months, you should aim to practise for a minimum of 2 to 3 times a week for 10 to 20 minutes at a time. This will help you remember how to read the music, where your fingers need to go, how to breathe, and it will help improve the facial muscles needed when playing a saxophone.

Do I have to take exams?

No, that is your decision. You might already be certain that you do, or don't, want to take exams. Or you may not know yet. Or you might change your mind. We can work around whatever you decide, and work with the exam board that best suits your objectives.

What style of music do you teach?

I will teach whatever style of music you prefer. Some pupils have very clear views about one type of music, and others like an eclectic mix. Your lessons are a partnership and we can ensure that you learn to play the music that you enjoy.
